The Power of Purpose: The Value of a Strong Community

Updated: Aug 4, 2023

The power of community. Something magical happens when people come together around a shared cause and work towards a common goal. You build relationships that last a lifetime, accomplish things you never thought possible, and feel a sense of fulfillment that's hard to find elsewhere. This sense of purpose is the driving force behind any successful community.

As an Airmen, this shared cause flew me across many seas and was strong enough to separate me from my family because I believe in the “cause.” I believe in my role. Many businessmen try to duplicate this type of dedication to a business. However, it cannot be easily replicated without a strong sense of community driven by inside and outside forces.

The first step in building a strong community is to define your cause. What do you stand for, and what problem are you trying to solve? This is your north star, and it will guide all your actions moving forward. Make sure it's a cause that resonates with your audience and is something they care deeply about.

People are more likely to rally behind a cause that feels personal and connected to their values.

Once you've defined your cause, it's time to start building relationships. People are the heart of any community; the stronger your connections, the more loyal your supporters will be. Start by being authentic and transparent in all your interactions. People can spot insincerity from a mile away, so ensure you're true to yourself and what your cause stands for. Next, engage with your audience regularly. Whether through social media, email, or in-person events, look for ways to connect with people on a deeper level. Ask for their feedback, offer support, and be responsive to their needs.

Another important aspect of building a strong community is to create a sense of belonging. Look for ways to foster a sense of unity and shared purpose among your supporters. This could be through shared values, a sense of humor, or a shared goal. Whatever it is, emphasize it at every opportunity and make it a central part of your community's identity.

Building a strong community around a shared purpose is one of the most powerful ways to create engagement and loyalty among employees and customers. By defining your cause, building relationships, and creating a sense of belonging, you can build a community to last.
